In the book, Chloe and her friends enjoy many traditional Peruvian foods.  Foods from Peru often use potatoes and spicy peppers.

Potatoes originated in Peru.  In fact, there are nearly 4,000 different types of potatoes.  They come in many shapes and colors and have been grown in Peru for thousands of years.

There are nearly 300 types of peppers used in Peruvian foods today.  The most popular is the aji pepper which originated in Peru.

Food from the book...

“What are salchipapas?” Chloe asked.

“French fries and fried sausages, but what makes theirs the best is the sauce they cover them with.  You can’t find anything like it in the states,” Tom replied.

Everyone drifted toward their favorite smells as they walked across the plaza.  Megan and Cory walked briskly behind Roger toward their daily plate of aji de gallina, a national favorite of shredded chicken cooked in milk, onions, and garlic.
